The Birth of a Bridge

The Story of the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Rochester, NY

The Veterans Memorial Bridge across the Genesee River is the longest bridge (981 feet) in New York State. It is approximately one mile north of the Lower Falls. Engineers documented each stage of the more than three-year construction and were able to complete the project by the scheduled deadline in December 1931. One newspaper report wrote “Its attractiveness is increase by the natural scenic beauty of the lower river, the span being in one of the most picturesque sections of the Genesee gorge.”
